Please join us for a workday on Saturday, May 18, 2024 from 10am to noon at the Charles & Albert Parker Families Nature Preserve next to the Brighton District Library on Orndorf Road. We have two main efforts happening:
In the interior of the preserve: Ongoing Garlic Mustard removal and cutting Autumn Olive shrubs, but not to the ground. We will be removing the bulk of the shrub to prevent it from developing fruit and then in June sometime, we will have another workday to cut the balance of the shrubs to the ground and apply herbicide on the stumps.
The Pollinator Project at the front of the preserve: We are weeding out any invasives, applying more tacky straw, removing the black tarp and raking out the dead grass, and then installing more native plants in that location. We will apply another tarp to a different location to begin further solarization.
Please dress for the weather, bring some water, and you may want to consider tick/mosquito repellent. Poison Ivy is making its debut so please be conscious of that as you are removing the GM or other invasives. We will have refreshments, light duty gloves, and other supplies like garbage bags for bagging the GM. If you have your own work gloves, feel free to bring them or any hand tools you might want to use like loppers or pruners. If you have not signed a waiver yet for this project, we'll have you do that before beginning any work.
Please RSVP at livingstonlandconservancy@gmail.com so we can be prepared for the number of volunteers attending. We appreciate your help and hope to see you on Saturday!
